Black History Month Profile: Abdul Hersiburane

As President of MainStreet Bank, Abdul Hersiburane sets the tone for the accessible and responsive way his team of bankers and lenders serves clients. He leverages a global perspective that reflects the extraordinary diversity of the market that MainStreet Bank serves. Striving to always lead by example, he ensures that his team meets and exceeds client needs, from onboarding to loan execution. Over the life of his career, Abdul has developed many long-lasting relationships with customers and prospects alike.

Abdul joined MainStreet Bank in 2007 at the peak of a successful career with large banks on two continents. He sees community banks as uniquely positioned to provide personalized, consultative services that can best help clients achieve their goals and aspirations.

He began his career in cooperative banking in his native Somalia, which was then the backbone of the country’s financial system. Somali cooperatives played a key role in building economic resilience by enhancing the collective power of individuals and small businesses to tackle challenges in times of distress.

Abdul initially served as Director of Administration and Finance (CFO) for the Union of Somali Cooperatives up until his shift to banking in 1984. He then worked as the Head of the Savings and Credit Cooperative Society in Somalia and was the Founder, President, and CEO of Cooperative Bank of Somalia. Abdul also served as a Board Member and Executive Committee member in East, Southern and Central Africa Cooperative Banking.

After moving to the United States, Abdul worked as Vice President and Senior Financial Adviser for a large national bank from 1996 to 2006.

The insights Abdul cultivated during his lengthy banking career in the U.S. and Somalia continue to accrue for MainStreet Bank clients’ benefit.

Abdul holds an MBA in Finance from Erasmus University in the Netherlands and a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce and Accounting from Polytechnic University Mogadishu. He speaks more than five languages and finds excellent satisfaction in meeting and learning about MainStreet Bank clients. He serves on the Large Community Bank Council of the Independent Community Bankers of America.
